Call on SD 61 Trustees to reinstate School Police Liaison Officers

The Issue

We are concerned citizens living in the Greater Victoria School District, deeply affected by the decision of the Greater Victoria Board of Education to remove School Police Liaison Officers (SPLOs) from our schools.

In May 2023 by a vote of 9-0, the Board unanimously voted to end the SPLO program - a completely free program that had been in place for decades (SPLOs were removed in Victoria in 2018, but police were still very much a part of the school community) and had played a vital role in our community. This program allowed police officers to work closely with students, building positive relationships throughout our district, helping them feel comfortable seeking assistance from SPLOs and learning to trust and rely on police.

The program focuses on prevention and early intervention where teachers identify worrisome behaviors beyond their capacity or expertise. This proactive approach makes a huge difference down the road with crime prevention.

The safety and well-being of our children should always be paramount. By reinstating the crucial school police liaison program, we can ensure that our students receive necessary support while fostering positive relationships with police officers. We must embrace inclusivity and shared learning so students can thrive in their learning community.

Chief of Victoria Police Del Manak had already agreed to make best efforts to look at how the SPLO program is delivered to ensure any concerns can be addressed. We fully support his suggestion to reinstate SPLOs and set up a committee with key stakeholders to address the changes necessary to aid the program in being as inclusive and supportive as possible.
