Call on MAPS to revise its public statement to recognize the Nova psychedelic community

The Issue

We are calling on MAPS to revise its public statement made on October 23rd to directly recognize the massacre of the Nova psychedelic community on Oct 7th by Hamas terrorists.

While there is truth in the generic statement made by MAPS regarding the importance of psychedelic healing to break cycles of violence and address the trauma of war, the suffering of "groups on both sides" doesn't somehow make the horrific murders, kidnapping and sexual violence perpetrated by Hamas at the Nova psychedelic festival less important.

The epicenter of this attack was an attack on our brothers and sisters in the psychedelic community. By hiding behind the complexity of centuries of Middle East politics, MAPS failed our community in addressing the simple horrible fact: we were attacked, we were murdered, we were raped, we were captured, and the psychedelic community needs that simple acknowledgement to be able to grieve.

The horrific massacre of Nova -  a community that describes itself as a "journey to peace, love, and unity" - was not meant by Hamas to be a secret. Hamas terrorists proudly live-streamed their bloodshed at the peak of most festival-goers' psychedelic journey; parading them while they were at their most vulnerable, with hands tied to their backs and showing clear signs of brutality and abuse. The blindness towards Hamas by organizations like MAPS not only works to actively and systematically de-validate certain psychedelic communities, undermining decades of progress, but it also sets an example that there is somehow justification for an assault on certain psychedelic communities under a specific context.

Somehow, two months later, we still see virtually no stance against Hamas and the most overt act of mass violence against a psychedelic community ever.

Taking a clear stance regarding the Nova psychedelic music massacre is not just about validation and healing. It is also about justice for and unity of psychedelic communities everywhere. We will never be able to move forward as a movement if we continue to tiptoe around the horrible reality of what Hamas has done to our psychedelic community.
