The Issue

Dogs have long been a part of countless families, serving as loyal companions and trusted friends. In Arizona, the case of Vida, a 3 year old Italian Mastiff, has recently captured the attention of many dog lovers and responsible pet owners in the community. This case not only affects Vida and her immediate family but also casts a concerning shadow over responsible dog ownership.  The punishment of ending her life or separating her from her family does not fit the crime and is excessive, especially considering her owners have taken necessary steps to ensure Vida is unable to leave the property by using multiple safeguards and are working closely with a professional trainer.  Vida has no previous history of incidents and lives peacefully with her family including three children.  Vida's family is currently not legally allowed to share details of the situation.

Vida is currently facing legal action despite having been evaluated on numerous occasions by professionals, including licensed animal behaviorists and animal control officers, who have all concluded that she is not a vicious dog. This repeated confirmation by experienced professionals highlights a significant flaw in the legal process that Vida is currently entangled in. The punishment of ending Vida’s life or separating her from her family is an irreversible and excessive measure that simply does not fit the situation at hand.

The implications of this case reach far beyond Vida herself. A decision to take extensive legal action in this case creates a precedent that instills fear in responsible dog owners. It questions the security of any pet owner's right to maintain their beloved animals. Fear of unjust consequences might deter potential dog owners from providing loving homes to dogs, or perhaps lead to the unwarranted surrender of dogs to shelters, further exacerbating the plight of unwanted animals.

We all have the right to live in safe communities, where both people and pets can coexist peacefully. However, such safety must consider evidence-based evaluations by trained professionals rather than determine the outcome of a dog's life and future based on breed. It is vital that our laws and community standards reflect fairness and proportionality,  and that no animal loses its life when clear, expert evidence proves that lesser, more reasonable actions would protect the community just as effectively.

This petition is not just about Vida. It is about ensuring that Arizona continues to be a community that values informed decisions, grounded in professional assessments, to protect the rights of both pets and their owners.

Add your voice to protect Vida, call for fair animal policies, and help keep Arizona a safe and compassionate place for families, pets and the general community.
