As student’s at Vancouver Island University (VIU), The Geographic Student’s Union (GSU) is deeply concerned about the proposal to discontinue the Advanced Diploma in Geographic Information Systems (ADGIS) and Master of Geographic Information Systems (MGIS) programs. These programs, one of only two such offerings in our province, provide unique opportunities for students from diverse fields - psychology, biology, geography, geology, and Resource Management Officer Technology (RMOT), among others - to add a GIS certificate to their skillsets. This certification is applicable across practically every career space.

The decision to cut these valuable programs seems hasty and lacks transparency regarding cost calculations. During the senate hearing the Dean of Social Sciences confirmed that some of the calculations were incorrect. It was proposed that the decision be postponed until after these calculations are done correctly but the provost and the dean argued that the senate members should make the decision right then; without the proper calculations. We believe that it is essential for VIU administration to postpone this decision until proper financial assessments have been conducted and made transparently available for the public.

These programs are not just courses; they represent pathways for students into diverse careers. The potential loss of these pathways would be a significant blow not only to current and future students but also potentially affect the broader community as we lose out on skilled GIS professionals.
