Call for urgent ICC review and UN Action in Tanzania

Call for urgent ICC review and UN Action in Tanzania
The Issue
On October 29, 2025, Tanzania went to the polls for its general elections — an event many hoped would mark a new chapter of accountability and democratic reform. Instead, what should have been a celebration of the people’s voice descended into a national tragedy. In the aftermath, thousands of young Tanzanians took to the streets, demanding that the elections be invalidated after widespread reports of fraud, intimidation, and the systematic silencing(kidnapping and abductions) of opposition voices.
Months leading to the vote, opposition leaders had been disappearing, jailed, harassed, or barred from campaigning, and the electoral process was tightly controlled by the ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi(CCM) under the incumbent- Samia Suluhu Hassan. Videos, livestreams, and posts flooded Instagram, X, and Meta, exposing brutal crackdowns, censorship of the mainstream media houses in Tanzania, and young protesters chanting for justice — their courage met with bullets instead of ballots.
What the world is now witnessing through social media is not just unrest; it is a generation rising up against injustice, risking their lives to reclaim their future and their country’s dignity.
Reuters reported on October 31, 2025, that the U.N. Human Rights Office received credible reports of at least 10 people killed by security forces during the post-election protests. Witnesses inside Tanzania describe many more wounded, detained, or missing. Hospitals are overwhelmed, families are mourning, and entire communities are living in fear without means to communicate with their loved ones on day 5 post election.
This movement is not about politics — it is about humanity, dignity, and freedom. The hope of a new generation has been met with violence and censorship. The dreams of Tanzanian youth — who should be shaping the nation’s future — are being crushed by repression.
As Tanzanian citizens and concerned global advocates, we call for justice, accountability, and immediate international intervention.
We urge the International Criminal Court (ICC) to urgently:
- Conduct an independent investigation into the killings and human rights violations.
- Hold those responsible accountable under international law. We also call upon the United Nations to:
- Deploy humanitarian and peace mediation teams to restore safety and freedom of expression.
- Ensure medical and emergency relief for victims and overstretched health facilities.
- Demand the restoration of communication access and protection of journalists covering the crisis.
This petition seeks to gather one million voices to stand as a beacon of solidarity with the people of Tanzania. Together, we can amplify their cries for justice and freedom before more lives are lost.
Sign and share this petition to urge the world to act — not in silence, but in defense of humanity.
Every signature counts toward saving lives and rebuilding hope for a peaceful and democratic Tanzania.
