Call for Transparency and Accountability regarding Public Advocacy for Repressive Regimes

Call for Transparency and Accountability regarding Public Advocacy for Repressive Regimes
The Issue
privilege that comes with the responsibility of upholding fundamental human rights.
It has come to our attention that individuals residing in Australia are actively using their freedom of speech to advocate for, or promote, the Islamic Republic of Iran—a regime widely documented by international bodies for human rights abuses, suppression of dissent, and support for terrorist-designated entities.
It is particularly distressing to observe that some of these individuals have personally benefited from Australia’s humanitarian and asylum programs—having sought and received protection from the very regime they now publicly defend. Using the freedom of this country to advocate for the same oppressive system they once fled is a profound ethical contradiction that undermines the integrity of Australia's humanitarian commitment.
While we respect the right to freedom of expression, we believe that promoting a regime that denies these very same rights to its own citizens is incompatible with Australian values. This advocacy creates an intimidating environment for the Iranian-Australian community, many of whom have fled the very repression that is being glorified or defended by these individuals.
We are not calling for the restriction of speech, but we are calling for increased scrutiny and ethical accountability. We urge academic and professional institutions to be aware of the values held by those who publicly champion regimes that violate international human rights standards.
We stand for the values of democracy, equality, and freedom—values that are fundamentally incompatible with the actions of the Iranian regime. We request that the public and relevant institutions monitor such advocacy and ensure that no platform is used to undermine the democratic principles that Australia stands for.
