Call For Timothy Jackson's Removal From UNT
The Issue
Recently, portions of a Palestinian art exhibit were removed from the University of Noth Texas' Union building for "anti-semitism". The art documented the reality of life for muslims and Palastinians in our current political climate amid the ongoing Palestinian Genocide, and in no way promoted anti-semetic sentiments or ideologies. The removal of this artwork was a racialized attack on these student's freedom of speech, and highlights the growing anti-muslim and anti-palestinian ideologies in America.
Timothy Jackson, a professor of music at the University of North Texas, was one of the people supporting the removal of the artwork. This is not the first time Jackson has been involved in racial controversy at UNT. Beginning in 2019-2020, Timothy Jackson published a racially motivated article in his academic Journal Schenkerian Studies attacking Philip Ewell, a Black professor of music, who wrote about racism within musical academia. Jackson's article was protested post publication, with over 900 professors and graduate students signing a letter denouncing his article for racism. later on, another anonymous letter was released calling for his resignation. Jackson responded to the critics of his article by suing the University of North Texas for infringing on his right to freedom of speech.
Timothy Jackson supports freedom speech when it pertains to his rights, but has made it abundantly clear he does not support freedom of speech when it pertains to the rights of people who do not share his same skintone. His continued history of racist attacks against BIPOC communities cannot be tolerated, and we must stand up to defend students rights to freedom of speech on campus. This petition calls for the immediate removal of Timothy Jackson from his position as a professor at the University of North Texas. His presence on campus threatens the wellbeing of all muslim and BIPOC students, and steps must be taken to protect them.
