Call for the Repeal of the Smith-Mundt Act
Call for the Repeal of the Smith-Mundt Act
The Issue
My trust in the media and our government has been fraught with tension due to the current policy that the Smith-Mundt Act props up. The Smith-Mundt Act, enacted in 1948, was designed to govern the dissemination of information about the United States abroad. However, the variant of this act, modified in 2013 allowed for the spread of the same information domestically - indirectly sanctioning propaganda distribution within U.S. boundaries (Congressional Research Services, 2013).
The current policy, which allows the U.S. government to broadcast propaganda messages to domestic audiences is creating an environment of mistrust. Freedom of press and information is one of our most valued constitutional rights, yet this Act undermines the very essence of it, making us question our media, our government, and most importantly, the truth.
It's high time we reevaluate the nature of the Smith-Mundt Act. This is not just a matter of trust - it's a matter of ensuring balanced information dissemination is upheld, a fundamental right for every citizen to maintain a thriving democracy.
Therefore, we implore every individual who values truth, transparency and democracy to join us in this fight. Sign this petition, call on our Representatives to relook into the consequences of the Smith-Mundt Act and strive for an environment of trust and truth, not of controlled and manipulated narratives. Let’s push for a repeal their extension into domestic propaganda. Together, we can restore trust. Please sign this petition today.
