The Issue

Public officials hold positions of authority that demand responsibility, integrity, and sensitivity to the concerns of citizens. When individuals occupying such offices make statements that appear to trivialize or dismiss allegations of harassment, it undermines public trust and sends a troubling message about accountability and respect for the dignity of citizens.

Recent public comments attributed to Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, in response to an incident involving allegations of harassment have generated significant public outrage and concern.

Many Nigerians believe the remarks were dismissive of the seriousness of the allegations. Rather than showing empathy toward the alleged victim and clearly condemning inappropriate conduct, the comments were perceived by many citizens as minimizing the gravity of the issue.

Leadership carries moral responsibility. Public office holders must demonstrate empathy, fairness, and a commitment to protecting the dignity and safety of all citizens. When leaders fail to meet these expectations, it erodes public confidence in government institutions.

This issue is not simply about one statement. It reflects a broader concern about the standards expected from individuals entrusted with public office. Citizens deserve leaders who understand the weight of their words and the impact their statements have on victims, families, and society at large.

For many Nigerians, especially those who believe strongly in justice, accountability, and responsible leadership, the comments attributed to the commissioner represent conduct that falls below the standard expected of someone occupying such a sensitive public role.

Public confidence in government institutions depends on the ability of leaders to respond to serious matters with empathy, responsibility, and clarity. When public officials fail to uphold these principles, it becomes necessary for the appropriate authorities to act.

Our Demand

We therefore call on the Lagos State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Rt. Honourable Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, to:

Conduct a thorough review of the statements made by Commissioner Gbenga Omotoso regarding the incident in question.

Hold him accountable for conduct that has undermined public trust and confidence.

Take immediate steps to remove him from his position as Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy.

Why This Matters

Accountability in public office is essential for maintaining the trust between government and citizens. When leaders demonstrate insensitivity to serious issues affecting the public, it weakens confidence in governance and sends the wrong message about justice and responsibility.

Citizens must continue to demand higher standards from those entrusted with leadership.
