Call for Scientific Reassessment and Dating of the Petralona Cave Findings

The Issue

To all relevant scientific and governmental authorities,

As citizens concerned with truth, science, and Greece’s global contribution to anthropology and human prehistory, we express our deep concern and disappointment over the prolonged inaction and lack of transparency regarding the Petralona Cave in Halkidiki and its findings.

For decades, this unique site and its significant paleoanthropological discoveries:

Have remained inaccessible to public and independent scientific investigation.

The findings (including the famous skull, tools, and fossil remains) have not undergone independent, modern dating using available technologies such as ESR, U/Th, OSL, or CT scanning.

No interdisciplinary and independent scientific committee has been appointed to reassess and publish the data according to international academic standards.

In the 21st century, it is unacceptable for such a potential treasure of human knowledge to be buried in bureaucratic disputes, personal rivalries, or ideological hesitation.

We hereby request:

1. The digital recording, documentation, and publication of all available findings from Petralona Cave.

2. Access to independent research teams (from both Greek and international institutions) for re-examination and accurate modern dating.

3. The formation of an international scientific committee, potentially under the supervision of the Greek Ministry of Culture or UNESCO.

4. The restoration and re-opening of Petralona Cave as a cultural, archaeological, and educational site of national and international importance.

Science requires transparency, collaboration, and openness to scrutiny. Greece must not hide from its past—it must illuminate it.

Let us give Petralona the scientific justice it deserves.
Let us finally discover who we were.

Respectfully,
