Take caution on the “Jail Hill” section of Hwy 16 (between the Yellowhead Bridge and Boundary Road) in Prince George, BC.
It’s that time of year when wildlife are frequently on the move in this area, and collisions are happening more often again 🦌⚠️🚘
There have already been multiple reports of dead wildlife along the roadside here recently, reminding us how dangerous this stretch can be - especially in the dark and fog.
Last November (2024), I started this petition calling for safety improvements like extra lighting, wildlife warning signs, and brush clearing along this notorious stretch of Highway 16.
It currently has over 1,200 signatures, but has not declared victory, as our main request for additional lighting hasn’t been met yet.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has made some progress to make the Jail Hill section safer - but has not yet added more lighting, which was the main goal of this petition.
✅ Wildlife warning signs were quickly installed on December 17, 2024 - just a few weeks after the petition started
✅ Brush clearing began in early 2025
❌ No additional lighting added yet
❗️ Concrete median installed – March 17, 2025, to help prevent head-on collisions
Although THE MEDIAN WAS NOT A REQUEST OF THE PETITION, it was part of an older road-safety project that had been planned years ago but left half-finished (the first section from Guay Road to the Yellowhead Bridge had been completed long before).
When the Ministry reviewed the area after the petition, they realized the remaining section up to Boundary Road was still incomplete and moved to finish it.
I’m thankful these steps were taken, as the median improves traffic safety and helps prevent head-on collisions - but many drivers have said the median now makes it even harder to see wildlife at night.
So while these were positive improvements, they didn’t solve the wildlife-collision problem - and that’s why lighting and other safety measures are still needed for better visibility and more time to react.
To build on the progress already made, the petition now includes three additional safety recommendations for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to consider:
💡 1. Improved Road Lighting
• Focus lighting around curves, dips, and brushy sections where visibility drops most.
• Use wildlife-friendly LEDs aimed downward to reduce glare and light pollution.
⚠️ 2. Motion-Activated or Flashing Wildlife Warning Signs
• Signs that flash only when large animals are detected nearby — already used successfully in BC and Alberta.
• Alerts drivers in real time.
🌿 3. Ongoing Brush & Vegetation Management
• Continue clearing brush and trimming ditches regularly to maintain sightlines.
• Prevents animals from being hidden and allows earlier visual detection.
If you agree we still need better lighting and continued safety improvements on Jail Hill, please sign or share the petition to keep the pressure on!
Let’s keep pushing for better visibility and safer roads for both drivers and wildlife. 💡🦌
