I wanted to share a hopeful new development - the Prince George Citizen has once again featured our community’s Jail Hill safety petition! Each time this story reaches more people, it brings us one step closer to achieving the lighting, driver, and wildlife safety improvements our community has been advocating for along the 3-kilometre stretch of Highway 16 between the Yellowhead Bridge and Boundary Road - known locally as “Jail Hill” or sometimes “Airport Hill.”
The article highlights the progress already made - including new deer warning signs, brush clearing, and the completion of the concrete median project that had been years in progress, but was likely finished sooner thanks to the attention this petition brought to the area. While these changes are encouraging, the story also recognizes that more work still needs to be done, especially when it comes to lighting. Many drivers continue to describe this stretch of highway as “pitch black” and difficult to navigate at night, particularly during deer season when wildlife collisions are most frequent.
In addition to the recent media coverage, I’ve also shared updates with BC’s Minister of Transportation, Mike Farnworth, including the article and a summary of our community’s ongoing concerns. While we’re truly grateful for the improvements already made, adding proper lighting would make a life-saving difference for both motorists and wildlife. I’ve also encouraged the Ministry to explore any other practical solutions that could further prevent wildlife collisions and improve visibility and safety for everyone traveling this route.
Our petition continues to grow, with over 1,240 signatures showing how deeply our community cares about this issue. Thank you to everyone who has signed, shared, and spoken up - your voices are being heard. Together, we’ve proven that change is possible, and with continued effort, we can make Jail Hill safer for all.
