This morning, December 20, 2024, at 8:15 AM, another deer was found dead on the side of the westbound lane of “Jail Hill.” The conditions were foggy and visibility was low, making it nearly impossible to see wildlife or even the deer crossing signs recently installed by the Ministry of Transportation.
While the addition of the deer crossing signs on December 17, 2024, shows progress and recognition of the issue, it is clear that more needs to be done to improve safety for both wildlife and drivers.
The ongoing wildlife collisions along this stretch, particularly at the top bend near Boundary Road, where multiple deer have been hit recently, highlight a critical need for enhanced safety measures. This area has proven to be a consistent wildlife crossing, with deer using it daily.
We are calling for further action to ensure the safety of wildlife and drivers:
1. Improved Lighting – Better visibility is crucial, especially in foggy conditions like this morning.
2. Further Investigation into Additional Solutions – While wildlife deterrents, fencing, and wildlife tunnels or overpasses are potential solutions, these measures need further investigation to determine the most effective course of action for this area.
This area requires more attention to identify the best combination of solutions to address the ongoing risk to both wildlife and drivers.
These solutions are vital to preventing further accidents, protecting wildlife, and improving safety for everyone on this road. We need to address this issue now before more lives - both human and animal - are lost.
