Call for President Ramaphosa to Reduce Cost of South Africa's Bloated Executive Cabinet

The Issue

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced members of his new 77-seat cabinet of the Government of National Unity (GNU), a significant increase from the already high 64 seats in the 6th administration. This decision has resulted in the largest national executive in the country’s democratic history.

At a time when unemployment is at its highest levels ever, the maintenance of this bloated executive will directly impact the national fiscus, diverting scarce resources to benefit a few privileged politicians at the expense of the competing needs of the broader population. It is unconscionable and scandalous that politicians would exacerbate the hardships endured by emaciated taxpayers and the poor, downtrodden masses of our people.

We acknowledge the circumstances that led to an increase in the size of the cabinet. However, we appeal to the conscience of the cabinet members to exercise restraint and employ austerity measures when taking advantage of the perks associated with their positions.

Therefore, we urgently call on President Ramaphosa to:

1. Review the Guide: Ensure that the guidelines for the use of public resources by the executive are stringent and reflective of the current economic climate.

2. Introduce Legislation: Urge the members of Parliament and/or the relevant parliamentary committee to promptly introduce legislation to scale down the excessive executive entitlements as provided for in the Ministerial Handbook.

We believe that these steps are essential to restoring public trust and ensuring that the government’s actions align with the principles of ethical governance and social justice.

Sign this petition to demand a more accountable and economically responsible executive cabinet. Let us work together to ensure that our government prioritises the needs of all South Africans, especially the most vulnerable, over the privileges of a few.
