The Issue

To: NATO and Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg

This is an open letter to all NATO leaders, Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, every leader of the aforementioned countries, and every citizen of the aforementioned countries.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” – Martin Luther King, Jr. It is now February 25, 2022 in Kyiv, Ukraine and Kyiv is under attack. Russia has exerted its power or shown intense military threat against Kharkiv, Odessa, Lviv, Zmiinyi Island, and many other smaller areas. While this happens, stand behind Ukraine. Not next to them, not in front of them, but behind them.

While the President Zelenskyy attempts to reassure his people, his country, that the threat beating down their doors will be repelled, you stand behind Ukraine. While Russia’s active forces outnumber Ukraine’s approximately 2:1, you stand behind Ukraine. While Russia’s tanks outnumber Ukraine’s approximately 3:1, you stand behind Ukraine. While Russia’s artillery outnumbers Ukraine’s approximately 2.5:1, you stand behind Ukraine. While Russia’s known ballistic missiles outnumber Ukraine’s approximately 1.5:1, you stand behind Ukraine. While the Ukrainian army stands against one of the strongest and most feared militaries in the world, you stand behind Ukraine. While NATO allies are sending troops to Romania, Poland, Germany, and along the Ukrainian border, you literally are standing behind Ukraine.

Why do you insist on fully defending every inch of NATO territory to the fullest extent of the treaties but not every inch of allied territory? Why do you agree to have Article 4 discussions when there have been no moves made toward actual NATO nations, but ignore Article 5 discussions when a nation who wishes to join NATO is under siege? Why do you commit to imposing sanctions against the aggressor of this invasion, but not commit to repelling the invasion itself?

NATO and world leaders have condemned this heinous act of President Putin publicly. A moral victory is meaningless in times of war. NATO and world leaders have put their thoughts and prayers with those in Ukraine. Thoughts and prayers are meaningless in a time of war. NATO and world leaders have placed hope in the conflict resolving. Hope is not a military strategy, not a plan. Hope is not meaningless in a time of war, but it is useless without swift and decisive action.

When asked if NATO will respond to the Russian invasion with force, Mr. Secretary you responded with telling your NATO allies that they will be safe. What of those who wish to be part of NATO? Are they not allies? Are those who support NATO’s most basic principles not allies? Are countries not allies before they are embraced by NATO?

The world is looking to you, Secretary Stoltenberg. The brave Russian citizens who protested the invasion are looking to you. The mothers and fathers of the Ukrainian soldiers are looking to you. The families huddled together listening to the ringing of air raid sirens are looking to you. The citizens of the NATO nations pleading for intervention are looking to you.

When the world is looking to you, Mr. Secretary, what are you going to do?
