Call for More Proactive Tree Preservation in Madison, CT

Call for More Proactive Tree Preservation in Madison, CT
The Issue
The destruction of trees is happening on multiple fronts in Madison. Much of it can and should be limited through a robust tree ordinance that is immediately adopted by the Town and outlined in the Town’s 2024 Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD).
We, the undersigned residents of Madison, CT, urge the town to adopt an ordinance to preserve the Town’s trees and ensure that is also reflected in the 2024 Plan of Conservation and Development.
Trees are a critical part of Madison’s ecosystem, climate protection and character. Mature trees in particular stabilize soil and aid in flood control. They improve air quality, decrease temperatures, and provide vital habitat to wildlife. They assist in neutralizing storm water run-off, reduce noise, and add beauty and value to the Town, contributing to new residents’ decision to move here, which ultimately impacts our tax base.
We are asking for the town of Madison take a proactive approach to protect and preserve our Trees considering the following key points.
• We propose a Town ordinance that regulates the removal of healthy mature trees.
• That the approval of plans by Planning & Zoning Commission requires the review and comment by the Conservation Commission and Tree Warden on any application involving the removal of 6 or more mature trees.
• That the Town Tree Warden’s responsibilities are singularly focused on inventorying, maintaining, and educating the community about trees.
• That the Tree Warden is given either the support staff or the voluntary aid of a Tree Advisory Board to effectively manage the Town’s trees and forests.
• That the Town follow through on the 2013 POCD recommendations and pass regulations to address the clear cutting of trees and that the 2024 POCD updates language to address a more specific and proactive tree conservation approach.
• That the Town’s zoning regulations be rewritten to reflect these updated ordinances.
It is for Madison’s public safety and welfare to prevent unnecessary tree loss; to effectively enforce tree preservation regulations; and to promote the appreciation and understanding of trees in our community. Most towns on the Connecticut shoreline, and beyond, have had such ordinances for decades. It is time for Madison to also take action.
Please sign this petition in support of Madison immediately adopting a Tree Ordinance and updating its 2024 Plan of Conservation and Development to preserve and protect trees.
