The Issue

Richmond, Indiana, is a community that prides itself on taking care of its citizens. However, recent incidents have highlighted a worrying trend that has put vulnerable individuals at risk. People in mental-health crises have been met with force rather than understanding, leading to fear and harm for those who seek assistance at their most desperate times. This must change.

Families in Richmond should never have to fear that calling for help might lead to their loved ones undergoing traumatic experiences due to inadequate crisis responses. The system is not set up to always provide the compassion and care that are needed in these situations. Instead, there is an urgent need for reform to ensure crisis calls involve trained responders who are adept at de-escalating tense situations and providing the empathy that suffering individuals need.

Proper mental-health crisis assessments and trained responders should be at the forefront of our community's response strategy. We need to implement and support training programs that equip responders with the skills necessary to handle mental-health crises appropriately. This means investing in resources that allow for real-time mental health support, creating accountability systems that ensure responders adhere to protocols meant to protect, and establishing a transparent platform for citizens to report instances of mishandling or brutality.

Real and meaningful change can only happen when our policing strategies are aligned with the genuine well-being of the populace they serve. We demand that Richmond reforms its crisis response policies to include comprehensive mental health training for first responders, establish measures to hold officers accountable for their actions, and cultivate an environment where both law enforcement and the community work together towards safety and compassion.

We urge city officials to take immediate action in addressing these issues. By signing this petition, you are calling for a safer, more understanding, and sincerely compassionate Richmond. It's time to ensure that our community's response to crises protects its people instead of causing further harm. Please join us in demanding these necessary changes. Sign this petition to support the call for better policing and mental-health crisis response in Richmond, Indiana.
