Call for immediate de-escalation and diplomacy in the U.S.–Iran conflict

Call for immediate de-escalation and diplomacy in the U.S.–Iran conflict
The Issue
The recent U.S. and Israeli military attacks on Iran on March 7 have created a dangerous and rapidly escalating situation. Many Americans are deeply concerned that these actions could trigger a wider regional war, threaten global stability, and repeat the mistakes of past conflicts in the Middle East. We are calling on Congress to exercise its constitutional oversight authority and push for immediate de‑escalation and diplomacy. Below is the full letter being sent to Congress.

Dear Member of Congress,
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent military attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran on March 7. These actions appear to constitute a dangerous escalation and raise serious questions about international law, regional stability, and the long‑term interests of the United States.
History has repeatedly shown that military interventions in the Middle East often produce consequences far beyond their initial objectives. The wars in Vietnam and Iraq serve as sobering reminders that entering a conflict without a clear understanding of the political, social, and regional dynamics can lead to prolonged instability, immense human suffering, and unintended strategic setbacks.
There also appears to be an assumption that military strikes or the targeting of key political or military figures would lead to the rapid collapse of Iran’s governing system or force immediate capitulation. However, the retaliatory responses already unfolding—including attacks across the region and threats to vital waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz—demonstrate how quickly such actions can widen a conflict and endanger global security and economic stability.
Another troubling consequence is that external military pressure often strengthens hardline factions within political systems rather than weakening them. Instead of encouraging reform or moderation, such actions risk consolidating power among the most radical elements and reducing prospects for internal political change.
The humanitarian implications are equally alarming. Reports indicate that civilian infrastructure—including schools, hospitals, densely populated urban areas, fuel depots, and desalination facilities—has been damaged or destroyed. Such developments increase the likelihood of a broader humanitarian crisis affecting millions of people across the region.
Decades of conflict in the Middle East have demonstrated that war frequently fuels instability, extremism, anti‑American sentiment, and the emergence of new militant groups. Escalating this conflict risks repeating those very patterns and could destabilize the entire region for years or even decades.
History also reminds us that global crises sometimes begin with small miscalculations. World War I began with a single act of violence that spiraled into a catastrophic international conflict. The events unfolding today carry a similar risk of escalation if decisive oversight and restraint are not exercised.
For these reasons, I respectfully urge Congress to exercise its constitutional oversight authority and call for an immediate de‑escalation of hostilities. The United States should prioritize diplomacy, restraint, and efforts to prevent a wider regional war rather than becoming further entangled in another prolonged military conflict in the Middle East.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent and consequential matter.
Sincerely,
