Call for Fair, Consistent and Transparent Policies at The Hamble School
Call for Fair, Consistent and Transparent Policies at The Hamble School
The Issue
We, the undersigned parents, carers and members of the local community, are calling for a fair and independent review of The Hamble School’s behaviour, disciplinary and uniform policies.
We support high standards of behaviour and believe schools should have clear rules. However, those rules must be applied fairly, consistently and equally to every pupil.
Parents have raised concerns about:
• Inconsistent enforcement of behaviour, disciplinary and uniform policies.
• Pupils receiving more than one sanction for the same incident.
• Excessive use of internal inclusion and repeated detentions, causing children to miss valuable classroom learning.
• Pupils being excluded from important school events, such as Sports Day, as an additional punishment.
• A lack of consideration for pupils’ mental health and wellbeing when disciplinary decisions are made.
• Concerns that the school’s uniform policy states girls’ skirts should be knee length, yet many parents have observed that a large proportion of pupils do not appear to meet this requirement while some pupils are sanctioned and others are not, leading to concerns about inconsistent enforcement.
School should be a place where children are educated, supported and treated with fairness and respect. Appropriate discipline is important, but children should not unnecessarily miss lessons through repeated detentions or internal inclusion where other approaches may be more appropriate.
We are calling on The Hamble School to:
Apply all policies fairly and consistently.
Ensure only one proportionate sanction is issued for a single incident unless separate breaches have occurred.
Reduce unnecessary use of internal inclusion and repeated detentions that remove pupils from education.
Avoid excluding pupils from important school events, such as Sports Day, unless there is a clear safeguarding or safety reason.
Take proper account of pupils’ mental health, wellbeing and individual circumstances when making disciplinary decisions.
Work with parents to review school policies and rebuild trust.
If you believe every child deserves to be treated fairly, please sign and share this petition.
