Call for early election in Mosakahiken Cree Nation

The Issue

In Mosakahiken Cree Nation Band Members, we face unprecedented challenges due to the impacts of COVID-19 that have disrupted our community's democratic processes. According to the Indian Act, which governs our elections, the Chief and Council elections occur every two years and are overseen by the Minister of Indigenous Services Canada (ISC). The upcoming elections were initially scheduled for November 2026. However, due to numerous interruptions caused by the pandemic, there is a pressing necessity to reschedule our community elections for July 24, 2026.

The pandemic has changed the landscape of governance within our nation. With social distancing measures, health crises, and shifts in public priorities, there is a growing need for new leadership to effectively address these new challenges. Our nation has always valued strong, accountable leadership. By moving our elections forward, we can ensure that our leaders are adequately equipped to respond to the evolving social and economic conditions that our community members face daily.

An early election will enable the newly elected Chief and Council to hit the ground running, fully prepared to tackle our most urgent needs without delay. Furthermore, this change will allow for a stable and uninterrupted transition period, ensuring that governance remains effective and focused. Amidst a world still grappling with the aftershocks of a global pandemic, we deserve leadership that reflects our current realities and aspirations.

We call upon the Minister of Indigenous Services Canada to recognize the extraordinary circumstances we face and approve our request for an early election.

Join us in shaping a proactive future for Mosakahiken Cree Nation. Sign this petition and support our call for a July 2026 election. Together, we can pave the way for responsive, resilient, and forward-thinking leadership.
