Ceasefire Now: Australian Health Care Workers

Ceasefire Now: Australian Health Care Workers

The issue

To Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong,

As Australian health care workers, we urge you to address the humanitarian disaster in Gaza.

We are proud to work in a health care system that serves people from different backgrounds. We are grateful for leaders who support us to uphold the medical ethical principles of non-maleficence (do no harm) and beneficence.

Catastrophic health events affect the entire spectrum of health care, from the influx of emergency cases to the disruption of acute and chronic health care services. They also inflict long-term, far-reaching effects in the form of trauma and disability.

The surge in violence between Israel and Hamas since October 7 has resulted in civilian casualties in Israel and Gaza. The military attacks on Gaza have rapidly escalated to an unimaginable catastrophe. According to Save the Children, over 3,000 children have been killed over 3 weeks, surpassing the annual death toll of children in the world’s conflict zones since 2019. As reported by Médecins Sans Frontières, over 2 million people are currently trapped in Gaza without access to food, water, electricity, and medicine. This has obvious consequences on the civilians and health care workers in the remaining health care facilities.

We cannot stand by silently and allow this to continue - to do so would betray our medical ethical principles. We urge you to demand an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Safiyyah Abbas and Dr Ella Tracey, Paediatric Registrars
Dr Kate Ahmad, Neurologist
