Call for APD to Implement ShotSpotters in Delmar Parkway, Aurora & Surrounding Areas

The Issue

Constant gunfire has become a norm for residents in Delmar Parkway/Aurora Cultural Arts neighborhood in Aurora, Colorado as well as the areas immediately surrounding it.

Neighbors report hearing gunshots every day and every night.

Many have said they no longer feel safe walking around the neighborhood or patronizing Colfax businesses, even in the daytime.

Residents are exhausted by being woken up from gunfire and having to call 911 constantly (often rapid gunfire, and 6 or more shots. Sometimes even rifles and machine guns.) Bullet casings can be found lining the streets.

Shootouts take place in the middle of the street, in apartment complex parking lots, and in alleys. Drive-by shootings happen in broad daylight. Gun violence has gotten completely out of control in this area. Even if the gunshots are not targeted at someone, they are being used to intimidate the neighborhood and can easily result in death.

What is ShotSpotter?

ShotSpotter has been used in other cities by police departments. 80% of shootings are never called in, skewing crime statistics and blurring the lines of where resources need to be sent.

"It’s like a digitized 911 call for gunshots that is faster and more accurate than our 50+ year old emergency call system"

This independent study found that ShotSpotter saves lives, reduces violent crime, enhances evidence collection, and saves the city $26 on every $1 spent. In this study, aggravated assaults and homicides decreased by 24%.

Aurora residents are begging the Aurora Police Department to invest in our community's safety and implement tangible items that can help reduce gun violence, such as ShotSpotters.

Statistics

Violent crime is 291% higher than the national average in Delmar Parkway

One resident's shooting log shows 4 different shootings in 1 night (10/17) in just a 1.5 mile radius, including 6 shots fired on Boston & 12th, gunshots on Colfax & Havana, machine gun shots in Expo Park, and gunshots on Rosemary & 13th.

This comes after the shootout at the Edge at Lowry apartments where 50+ rifle shots were fired in the parking lot on August 18th.

Since then, residents have logged and reported gunshots nearly every day, including 2 more rapid shot incidences in that area of Dallas & 12th on 10/13, and more shots fired on the 1700 block of Boston on 9/29 that resulted in a man dying.
