The Issue

On July 3, the White House put out a promotional video calling a chain of gas stations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey "Freedom Fuel Network" and crediting President Trump with lowering gas prices. Trump had announced the company on Truth Social two days earlier.

Here is what we know about Freedom Fuel Network: it incorporated in Delaware in June, it does not appear in business registration searches in Pennsylvania or New Jersey, it did not respond to press questions, and it has not disclosed who owns it.

Here is what else we know: gas prices are up 80 cents per gallon since the United States went to war with Iran in late February. The average gallon of gas in Pennsylvania costs $3.99. Freedom Fuel's opening price was $3.47, offered for two days, before rising to $3.57. A 42-cent discount at 25 stations does not undo an 80-cent increase across an entire state.

Experts who study energy markets describe the Freedom Fuel launch as a marketing effort, not a market intervention. The price cuts are concentrated within a mile or two of each station and are unlikely to last. The company is operating on thinner margins during a period when crude prices have fallen following the Iran ceasefire, meaning the discount costs less than it appears.

None of that would be especially remarkable if the president of the United States had not used his platform and the White House communications apparatus to promote the company. When a sitting president endorses a private business by name, the public has a right to know whether he or anyone close to him has a financial stake in it.

Pennsylvania law allows the Office of Attorney General to investigate price gouging only during a declared state of emergency. Gas prices jumped 80 cents per gallon in weeks. If that does not meet the threshold for a declaration, it is worth asking what does.

Sign this petition to demand Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro declare a price gouging emergency and activate the AG's investigative authority; urge the Pennsylvania and New Jersey attorneys general to compel disclosure of Freedom Fuel Network's ownership; and call on the House Oversight Committee to investigate whether President Trump holds any financial interest in Freedom Fuel Network or its parent entities.
