We, the progressive forces from all over Europe, are calling for a historical march in Brussels against apartheid and genocide in Palestine and to denounce the inaction and complicity of our governments. We urge all local associations and political parties in Brussels that share our concerns for justice and peace to answer this call by organizing a European-wide demonstration that will culminate in front of the European Parliament. We will demand our governments impose sanctions on Israel until it complies with international law, stops its genocidal war in Gaza and ends its illegal occupation of Palestine. We believe it is our imperative duty to address the urgency of the situation by organizing this march before the end of June 2024.
We, the signatories from all sectors of civil society, labor unions and student organizations, pledge to join efforts to make it possible for all concerned citizens in Europe to travel to Brussels to make their voices heard. We also pledge to promote this initiative and use all means at our disposal to publicize it, through social media, the press, or any other form of communication.
Our world is at a turning point in history. For over eight months now, a genocide, documented by all major human rights organizations and the United Nations, has been carried out in Gaza under the watch of our political leaders. As of today, more than 40,000 innocent civilians have been killed, about half of them children, while many more are injured or missing. Despite recent pressure from the international community to put an end to the carnage, the Israeli government has vowed to continue its sinister rampage for months to come.
On May 24, 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the highest court of the United Nations, delivered an order requesting Israel to immediately stop its military operations in Rafah to avoid the irreparable consequences of the crime of genocide. Israel’s formal refusal to abide by this decision was followed by an increase in the intensity of its deadly military operations. Earlier, on May 20, 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor had applied for arrest warrants against the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, and its Minister of Defense, Yoav Gallant, for alleged war crimes in Gaza.
In an unprecedented move against the very institutions and moral principles they claim to uphold and protect, Western leaders have decided to trample on international law by failing to fulfill their legal obligation to do everything in their power to force the government of Israel to respect the ICJ’s order. This includes, in particular, economic and diplomatic sanctions against Israel, as well as an arms embargo to prevent further use of deadly weapons against civilians in Gaza. Our political leaders’ refusal to take their responsibility under international law makes European countries effectively complicit in the genocide carried out by Israel.
In addition to the Israeli military's genocidal aggression in Gaza, Israel has intensified its brutal occupation of the West Bank, bombing civilian infrastructure and allowing an unprecedented level of settler violence against the Palestinian civilian population under its watch.
The time has come to end this conflict by bringing justice to a people who have been oppressed and ethnically cleansed for decades with the support and complicity of our own governments, and with our taxpayer money.
In the decades and perhaps centuries to come, this generation will be remembered either as the one that demanded the realization of human rights for all, rejecting the indefensible double standards of our European and Western leaders, or as the one that lent itself to one of the worst betrayals and hypocrisies in human history.
As concerned citizens, many of us have felt disempowered in the face of our governments’ inaction and the repression and intimidation exerted everywhere over those who dare to speak up against it. Protests and recent student activism all across Europe have been inspiring but lack the power of numbers. These exemplary, continued and commendable efforts call upon the widespread support of all our communities, from all walks of life. This time, we all need to be there and deliver. Society's' collective failure to stop a preventable genocide, bring justice, and end the occupation can and needs to be rectified. By acknowledging the collective responsibility of European countries in this crisis and uniting all the progressive forces of the continent to march in Brussels, not only can we make victory possible, but inevitable. The voices of millions of concerned citizens cannot be silenced nor can they be ignored. In response to the moral bankruptcy of the European Union, we will demonstrate as the people united against tyranny, against the desecration of the human rights promise, and against genocide.
