Call for Administrative Accountability: Address College Admission Threats by Edison HS VP

The Issue

A shocking recording reveals Nicole Himmelstein, Vice principal of Edison High School, threatening to revoke college acceptances of 8 students over a disagreement of holding a joint Iftaar event.

The Joint Iftaar event usually with other neighboring schools is held annually for the past couple of years, serving not only as a heartwarming community bonding event for muslims but a bridge to understanding Islam for the wider community. It has consistently received positive feedback from students, alumni and faculty.

So, the recording revealed by CAIR NJ ( a nonprofit advocacy organization) dating to February 29, 2024, has left us all enraged. Ms. Himmelstein’s actions constitute a misuse of authority  and a violation of professional conduct. Threatening students’ college acceptance to influence a disagreement creates an undue pressure tactic and undermines the supportive environment that all students deserve.

The Edison High School District prides itself on inclusivity and fostering a diverse learning environment and Ms. Himmelstein’s actions contradict these values.

Listen to firsthand accounts from MSA President of Edison High School, Taha Shaikh who voices,

“ I felt discriminated  against, and the board felt afraid as well because it felt like she was threatening our college acceptances after we worked hard for four years. I felt she was trying to bully us into not hosting the joint event, even though other school clubs have been allowed to invite outside students to their events.”

Aya Elamroussi, communications manager of CAIR-NJ, reveals similar sentiments in the official press release:

“ It’s extremely alarming to see a school official who is supposed to lead by example allegedly use her position of power to threaten Muslim students over an event aimed at nurturing their relationship and growing their community.”

We urge the Edison Board of Education(and all district members) to take appropriate action to address this concerning situation, reprimand Ms. Himmelstein’s behavior, and implement a standard to prevent similar incidents in the future.

By signing this petition, you are calling for:

  • A commitment to educational equity and fair treatment for all students at Edison High School.
  • A thorough investigation into the statements of Ms. Himmelstein.
  • Appropriate action taken by the Board of Education to ensure a respectful and inclusive learning environment.
