Call for Accountability and Protection of Civilian Lives Under International Law
Call for Accountability and Protection of Civilian Lives Under International Law
The issue
To: Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump, and members of the international community
We are calling for independent international scrutiny of actions resulting in widespread civilian harm, and for accountability under established frameworks of international law.
Civilian protection must remain paramount, and no leader or nation should stand beyond the reach of justice.
We, the undersigned, call for:
1. Accountability under international law
That actions resulting in widespread civilian harm be independently examined under the frameworks of international humanitarian law, including review by the International Criminal Court where appropriate.
2. Protection of civilian life
That all decisions prioritise the immediate and ongoing protection of civilians, including access to essential resources such as food, water, shelter, and medical care.
3. Transparency and oversight
That decision-making processes and military actions be subject to international scrutiny to ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards.
4. Leadership grounded in responsibility
That those in positions of power recognise their obligation not only to national interests, but to shared human values and global accountability.
Why this matters
The integrity of international justice depends on its universality.
If it is applied selectively, it ceases to be justice at all.
We are living in a moment where the consequences of power are no longer distant or abstract—they are visible, immediate, and deeply human.
We are also reminded that regional conflict does not remain contained.
Critical global corridors, such as the Strait of Hormuz, underpin the stability of energy supply and economic systems worldwide. Any disruption carries consequences far beyond borders—impacting livelihoods, economies, and the everyday lives of people across the globe.
This further underscores the need for measured, accountable leadership in moments of heightened tension.
Beyond human consequence, there is also the quiet cost carried by the Earth itself—
in land, in water, in the fragile systems that sustain life.
What is affected in moments of conflict often remains long after, reminding us that responsibility extends not only to one another, but to the world we share.
