Australians Deserve Accountability, Transparency and Responsible Leadership
We, the undersigned Australians, call on Members of the Australian Parliament to consider and support a Parliamentary Vote of No Confidence in the Albanese Government.
This petition is a peaceful and democratic call for accountability.
A government is entrusted with the responsibility of protecting the interests of Australians, managing public money responsibly, maintaining transparency, and acting in the national interest. When public confidence in a government’s leadership has significantly declined, Australia’s democratic institutions must provide a mechanism for accountability.
A Growing Loss of Public Confidence
Since taking office in May 2022, the Albanese Government has faced increasing criticism over its handling of:
- cost-of-living pressures;
- housing affordability;
- inflation and economic management;
- government spending;
- transparency and integrity;
- resource policy;
- migration and infrastructure planning;
and public trust. - Many Australians feel that the Government has not delivered the leadership, accountability and economic relief promised at the 2022 election.
Cost of Living, Inflation and Economic Management
Australians were promised support through a period of rising living costs, yet households continue to experience significant financial pressure.
Mortgage repayments, rents, groceries, insurance, energy costs and essential services have placed increasing strain on Australian families.
While global factors have contributed to inflation, many Australians believe Government spending and policy decisions have not adequately supported the Reserve Bank of Australia’s efforts to return inflation to target.
The ongoing economic pressure raises questions about whether current fiscal policies are effectively supporting Australians or contributing to continued financial stress.
Housing Crisis and Government Policy
Australia is facing one of the most significant housing affordability crises in generations.
Despite government initiatives intended to improve access to housing, many Australians believe housing supply has not kept pace with demand and that policies have not adequately addressed the pressures facing renters and first-home buyers.
The promotion of the 5% deposit Home Guarantee Scheme through taxpayer-funded advertising, including campaigns translated into Mandarin and Arabic, has attracted criticism from Australians who question whether government resources are being used effectively while many Australians already living here struggle to afford housing.
The concern is not about supporting Australians from diverse backgrounds. The concern is whether government policy is sufficiently addressing the housing shortage affecting millions of Australians.
Public Money, Transparency and Integrity Concerns
Australians expect governments to protect taxpayer funds and provide transparency when serious questions arise about public spending.
The release of Geoffrey Watson SC’s report Rotting from the Top raised significant concerns regarding alleged corruption, governance failures and oversight within Victoria’s construction sector and the CFMEU.
The report estimated that corruption-related impacts associated with Victorian Big Build projects could have cost taxpayers up to $15 billion. While this estimate has been disputed, the report raised serious questions about procurement practices, accountability and whether sufficient safeguards existed to protect public money.
Calls for stronger investigation, including a Royal Commission, have been made by transparency advocates and former integrity officials who argue that Australians deserve a complete examination of how alleged systemic failures occurred.
The issue has contributed to broader concerns about whether governments at all levels are adequately protecting taxpayer funds and holding those responsible for failures to account.
Integrity, Transparency and Changing Positions
The Albanese Government was elected with commitments to improve integrity and accountability.
However, decisions surrounding transparency measures, public hearings and the operation of integrity bodies have resulted in criticism from Australians who believe greater openness is required.
The establishment of the National Anti-Corruption Commission was an important reform, but debate over when hearings should be public has led some Australians to question whether the system meets community expectations for transparency.
Public confidence requires not only anti-corruption bodies, but a willingness from governments to allow appropriate scrutiny when serious concerns are raised.
Natural Resources and Gas Policy
Australia is one of the world’s largest exporters of natural gas, yet many Australians continue to experience high energy costs.
There have been calls from community groups, political parties and some Australians for a greater return to the public from Australia’s natural resources, including proposals for a gas export tax.
The Albanese Government chose not to introduce a broader gas export tax, instead pursuing alternative measures including domestic gas reservation policies.
Critics argue that Australians should receive a greater benefit from the nation’s resources and that more action is needed to reduce energy pressures on households and businesses.
This decision has contributed to concerns about whether government policy is sufficiently prioritising Australian consumers during a period of significant cost-of-living pressure.
The Voice Referendum and Government Priorities
In October 2023, Australians voted against the proposed Voice to Parliament referendum.
The result represented a significant rejection of the Government’s constitutional proposal, with a majority of Australians voting No in every state.
Many Australians felt that substantial political attention and resources were directed toward this issue while concerns about housing, inflation and economic pressures remained unresolved.
The referendum outcome highlighted a disconnect between government priorities and the concerns of many voters.
Our Request
We call upon Members of the House of Representatives to:
Debate whether the Albanese Government continues to hold the confidence of the Australian people.
Consider a Parliamentary Vote of No Confidence.
Ensure Australians have leadership that demonstrates:
- transparency
- responsible economic management
- protection of taxpayer funds
- accountability and policies that put Australians’ wellbeing first.
- Australia’s democracy depends on governments being accountable to the people they serve.
This petition is a lawful and peaceful request for Parliament to examine whether the current Government continues to maintain the confidence required to lead Australia.
