Call for a moratorium on AI data centers in Canada
The Issue
I am deeply concerned about the increasing number of AI data centers being constructed across Canada and their profound implications on multiple facets of our lives. As someone who treasures privacy, the thought of mass surveillance and data mining by these massive data centers is alarming. Not only does it pose a significant threat to our privacy, but it also exacerbates rising energy costs, thereby impacting the quality of life for everyday citizens.
AI data centers consume an enormous amount of energy, which inevitably leads to increased energy costs. The proposed Synapse AI data center in Olds, Alberta, would consume 1 gigawatt (GW) of electricity daily. This massive amount of power is equivalent to the energy used by up to one million homes, or roughly 10% to 15% of the entire province's current power consumption. In Canada, where cold climate conditions should ideally reduce cooling costs, the sheer scale of energy required could still cause an economic imbalance leading to higher utility prices for ordinary Canadians.
Moreover, as large tech companies rush to establish these centers, the rush has led to environmental concerns. These centers contribute significantly to carbon emissions, counteracting the national goals set for combating climate change. A study by Nature Communications estimates that if data center growth remains unchecked, they could be responsible for 3.2% of the global carbon footprint by 2040.
Our local communities are usually kept in the dark regarding the plans and implications of these projects. There is often little to no public engagement, leaving us voiceless in critical decisions impacting our living environment. To this end, I call for a moratorium on the establishment of new AI data centers until there is comprehensive public engagement and rigorous assessments of their environmental, societal, economic, and political impact.
Such a pause would allow policymakers and citizens to assess these projects' true cost and benefit fully. It provides the necessary time for creating robust regulatory frameworks and ensures that the voices of local communities are heard and valued in decision-making processes. Our goal should be to make sure that technological advancement does not come at the cost of our privacy, environment, or unduly burden our economy.
Sign this petition to call on our government to halt further development of AI data centers in Canada and engage in genuine dialogues with the Canadian public to create an inclusive and sustainable future.
