Call for a Change in EU Representation in Kosovo-Serbia Dialogue

The Issue

For lasting peace and fruitful dialogue between nations, it is essential that discussions are facilitated by unbiased mediators. Deep-seated concerns have emerged regarding the ability of the current EU representatives, Miroslav Lajčák and Josep Borrell, to impartially mediate the Kosovo-Serbia talks.

Both Lajčák and Borrell hail from countries, Slovakia and Spain respectively, that do not recognize Kosovo's independence. Furthermore, throughout their political careers, they have hinted at their personal opposition to Kosovo's independence. This raises immediate concerns about their ability to approach the dialogue with the necessary neutrality.

While Lajčák and Borrell may be representatives of wider EU policy, their apparent bias does not aid the peace process. It instead creates an environment of mistrust and uncertainty. Their bias towards Serbia and its president, Aleksandar Vučić, has been manifested in various declarations and statements, further compromising their positions as impartial mediators.

This bias is deeply concerning, given Serbia's history and its close alignment with Russia. It's important to remember that Vučić was an acolyte of Slobodan Milošević, a man notorious for instigating genocides and wars in the Balkans, and has not shown remorse or distanced himself from Serbia's nationalist and hegemonic aspirations.

Their years of overseeing the dialogue have shown little progress, and there's a real concern that if the EU policies and representation continue on this course, it risks destabilising the region even further. This state of affairs is untenable and speaks to their failure in effectively mediating the dialogue.

Fair negotiations hinge on the principles of neutrality and impartiality. The parties involved should have confidence that their interests are being represented equally and without prejudice. Regrettably, this trust appears to be compromised under the current EU representation.

By this petition, we call for a change in the EU representation in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue. We firmly believe that the appointment of new, impartial mediators is necessary for the negotiations to progress in a balanced, democratic, and just manner.

This change would help restore faith in the process and pave the way towards a mutually beneficial resolution that respects the sovereignty of all parties involved and aligns with the democratic values and policies upheld by the EU and the US.

Let's stand together for fair and unbiased negotiations. Sign this petition to advocate for a change in EU representation in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.
