Say “no” to a highway through Union City before June meeting

Say “no” to a highway through Union City before June meeting
The Issue
Union City, Fremont and CALTRANS are going “full steam ahead” on a project to build the East-West Connector (EWC) and will ask the California Transportation Commission (CTC) in June 2021 to approve this plan. A CALTRANS request to sell surplus Highway 84 land in Union City (known as Ramirez Farm) will allow building this so-called “local road,” in Fremont. This will be rebranded as a multimodal 6-lane Decoto Road connection to Interstate 880. This Highway 84 Extension will cost taxpayers $320 million and will be maintained by our cities, not CALTRANS.
What you need to know about the East-West Connector:
The construction of State Route 84 Extension has a new alignment between Interstate 880 and Mission Boulevard. It's called the EWC, shown above. We disagree that the EWC is a local road. The true purpose of this project is to construct a high-speed, high-vehicle-capacity thoroughfare through the heart of our residential community. If built, the connector will serve out-of-area commuters at the expense of local residents!
- The Highway 84 Extension Project, rebranded as a local road, will support regional automotive access to future housing development on over 1,300 acres in the Union City and Fremont Hills.
- The Highway 84 Extension Project will promote more traffic on our highways and interstates.
- It will endanger our watershed and Alameda Creek.
- Highway 84 extension will add a much-unwanted bottleneck at Niles Canyon.
This Highway 84 Extension will cost taxpayers $320 million and will be maintained by our cities. CALTRANS will start the project selling Segment 2, a 39-acre Ramirez Farm, at the Union City/Fremont border on Alvarado-Niles Road. The proposed EWC will have significant consequences to our environment. Your signature will:
1. Ask the California Transportation Commission to vote NO on the sale of 39-acres of farmland to Union City. The state should recognize that selling public state-owned Highway 84 surplus land will allow for two Highway 84 regional connections. The state’s sale allows the Cities of Union City and Fremont, not the state, to build and maintain forever the Highway 84 Extension.
2. Ask to stop the East-West Connector, as it is a State Route Highway 84 Extension Project! STOP the widening up to 6- lanes on Decoto Road, 6-lanes on Paseo Padre Parkway, and creating a new 4-lane Quarry Lakes Parkway to Mission Boulevard. State Route Highway 84 connections through our cities will create congestion caused by pass-through commuters. We do not deserve this!
