Kern County government just announced that they are starting a 7 mile extension to the Kern River path headed westward out of Bakersfield. Soon this trail will stretch all the way to Buena Vista Lake, the location where the Kern River historically terminated. This is great news, as it will bring the path up to nearly 40 miles in total length, stretching from Lake Ming in the east, to Buena Vista Lake in the west. The Kern River Path is an extraordinary amenity, bisecting California's 9th largest city and providing great recreational and exercise access to the hundreds of thousands of people who live near it. 

You all know what the problem is, though - the river path doesn't have a river. On a day to day basis, there's a significant difference in the beauty and enjoyment the path provides on the rare occasions when there is water in the riverbed than when there is none. On a longer time scale, the enjoyment of the parkway and the river path could be increased substantially by sustained flow in the riverbed. Areas that are dead would come back to life- trees, shrubs, and grasses could flourish again, birds and other wildlife could return to the now desolate, barren banks of the river.
