Rationale

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CSUMB instruction is primarily virtual for academic year (AY) 2020-2021. The Economic Policy Institute indicates that online learning and teaching are effective only if students have consistent access to the internet and computers and if teachers receive targeted training that supports online instruction. There are still disparities that are prevalent in this regard. 

2020 is an unprecedented year with students navigating through challenges like the pandemic and wildfires burning across California where they were impacted by poor air quality, power outages, temporary rehousing for themselves or housing loved ones. The presidential election and political climate added onto a lot of stressors. 

Other exacerbating struggles include the passing of loved ones, unemployment, food or housing insecurity. Students are taking on extra responsibilities, like heavier course loads, or taking care of their families. While some faculty have extended their compassion not all have demonstrated flexibility or understanding.  

WHAT WE’RE ASKING

In Spring 2020, CSUMB modified its grading policies for students to be able to choose between Credit/No Credit, ABC/No Credit, or letter grades till the end of the semester. 

Multiple university campuses including UC Berkeley​, Cal Poly SLO​, Fresno State, San Diego State, San Francisco State, CSU Fullerton, CSU Stanislaus  have altered their Fall 2020 grading policies to better support students.  

As students are experiencing significant stress and challenges, permitting students to choose their grading options would alleviate stressors and create flexibility. We ask that CSUMB extends similar guidance provided in Spring 2020 on options for flexibility in campus grading systems into this 2020-2021 AY.
