Alisha Tapia is a single mother who has struggled with addiction due to emotional trauma and domestic violence. Due to her two non-violent strikes, she was forced to go to trial where she lost & received (the only offer) the maximum of 36 years to life. She was unable to afford a paid attorney, there was no solid and genuine effort for proper and adequate representation. She begged her public defender for alternative sentencing such as a mental health diversion program or a drug treatment facility but to no avail.
