Change Cal Poly Pomona’s Spring 2020 Grades to have the OPTION for Pass/No-Pass

Change Cal Poly Pomona’s Spring 2020 Grades to have the OPTION for Pass/No-Pass

The Issue

This petition was created for the purpose of giving every Cal Poly Pomona student the OPTION to switch individual classes they are taking to a pass/no pass system. Meaning that students are able to take classes without receiving a letter grade. This means that there will be NO EFFECT on your GPA. Students should be allowed to decide now until Week 15 which classes they would like to change to a pass/no-pass system. This system should be based on individual students and on a per class basis. This petition was created to give students more options as they have less resources to succeed this semester.

With all lectures and labs now completely online, classes have become much more difficult. Students no longer have access to in-person office hours, study sessions, and tutors which are greatly utilized for most classes. Therefore, even attaining a passing grade, let alone an A or B, in any given class has become EXTREMELY burdensome. Thus, we call for the OPTION of all students to determine whether they want their class to be converted to pass/no-pass AND MORE IMPORTANTLY STILL COUNT ALL THESE P/NP CLASSES AS MEETING MAJOR REQUIREMENTS (i.e. count as an upper division elective for a student's major, should this apply).

Moreover, the stress from this pandemic continues to not only affect students' lives but also their studies. Many students are not only having trouble with the transition to online, but also have other personal matters to tend to. From financial struggles, tending to family members/kids, work schedules, health concerns, technical issues, or etc. NO STUDENT CAN BE EXPECTED TO PERFORM AT THEIR NORMAL ABILITY UNDER THESE APOCALYPTIC CONDITIONS.

We hope that the CSU Chancellor, CPP President, CPP Vice President of Academic Affairs, CPP VP of Student Affairs and the CPP Academic Senate consider making this change for the health and well-being of their students in a time of overwhelming stress and great uncertainty. Please support your students and their families.
