Make Juneteenth (June 19) an official California state holiday

Make Juneteenth (June 19) an official California state holiday
The Issue
Currently, Juneteenth (June 19) -- which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States -- is not an official holiday in the State of California. As our state and country engages in the soul-searching and important conversations needed to combat the scourge of racism in our society, it is important that these conversations remain ongoing. Adding Juneteenth as an official California state holiday is one opportunity to that end.
Sanctifying Juneteenth as a holiday will give all Californians an opportunity to acknowledge the pain racism has caused, honor the lives that have been lost and express our commitment that Black lives matter.
It also gives us an opportunity to celebrate the progress we've made, strengthen our sense of community statewide, and reflect on the ways we can continue to grow.
If you agree that Juneteenth should be made an official California state holiday, please sign this petition. In addition to signing this petition, consider reaching out to your local assemblyperson and state senator, and encouraging them to propose legislation to make Juneteenth a state holiday.
