Why this petition matters

Started by Simone Nevels

Recently, my family and I were trying to add a new member into our household. We found the most perfect puppy and welcomed it with open arms. We were told it was 8 weeks, though it was very tiny and lazy. We brought him to the vet where we were told he was only 3 to 5 weeks old, and was malnourished. They treated him with medicine, and sent us home with formula, but sadly he died that night. It was very heartbreaking even though we knew him only a little over 24 hours. We lost an $800 family member, and wasn't even refunded. I suggest pet stores should be able to sell dogs once again, to avoid problems like that. Once that happens we should also ban backyard breeders. The feeling of losing a loved one is very heartbreaking, and it is regarding animals as well.

According to paws.org, "Backyard breeders are also motivated by profit. Ads from these unscrupulous breeders fill the classifieds. Backyard breeders may appear to be the nice neighbor next door-in fact, even seemingly good-intentioned breeders may treat their breeding pairs as family pets. However, continuously breeding animals for years to produce litters for a profit still jeopardizes the animals’ welfare. Some backyard breeders may only breed their family dog once in awhile, but they often are not knowledgeable on how to breed responsibly, such as screening for genetic defects. Responsible, proper breeding entails much more than simply putting two dogs together."

This tells me many backyard breeders put on a show to tell us how good their animals are and how good they're taking care of them. And the truth is they aren't, they only do this for money , and not to help people find a new loved one. Many don't know that they have to do more then make sure the animal is born. which puts the animals life at risk. Backyard breeders also breed plants, and to me it seems as an easier job than taking care of an animal, but many plants are dying in there backyard as well as all around the world.
