Make Pet Skunks Legal with Permit in California
Make Pet Skunks Legal with Permit in California
The Issue
As of now, skunks are illegal to own as pets in most US states, including California. However, domesticated pet skunks are legal to own in nearly 20 other states, such as Oregon, New York, New Jersey, and Florida.
Pet skunks are very rare, partly due to tight restrictions and false beliefs that they are mere stinky rodents (which isn’t true—they aren’t even rodents!). However, when skunks are domesticated for pet ownership, their spray glands are removed while they’re still young. And while many people falsely believe that this practice is inhumane, most experts agree that it is comparable to spaying/neutering: largely harmless and necessary. Following the removal of the spray glands, pet skunks no longer retain a foul smell.
Domesticated skunks also make wonderful, playful pets, and most are very docile and friendly—not to mention they’re stinkin’ cute. They are even capable of getting along well with other pets, such as cats and dogs. They can usually be potty trained rather easily, often with a litter box, and may even adopt sleeping patterns similar to that of their owners. Not only that, but evidence shows that domesticated pet skunks tend to live longer, healthier lives than wild skunks; while wild skunks have a lifespan of about 3 years, domesticated skunks can live up to 10 years!
So as you can see, there is really no reason that domesticated skunks shouldn’t be legal to have as pets. As long as they are domesticated and not wild, there shouldn’t be any harm in owning one. In most states where they are legal, a permit is needed. The same rules should apply in California. Let us own pet skunks!
