The Issue

California is one of the most diverse states in the nation — yet our laws still fail to recognize the language spoken by millions of our people. Spanish has been part of this land for centuries, long before California became part of the United States. From Indigenous communities influenced under colonization to Mexican families who built towns, farms, and businesses, Spanish is deeply woven into the very foundation of California.

Today, more than 10 million Californians speak Spanish. It’s the language of our parents and grandparents, the language of our schools and workplaces, the language heard in businesses, neighborhoods, hospitals, and universities every single day.

Still, California refuses to acknowledge Spanish as an official language. This is not just an oversight — it’s an injustice. By failing to recognize Spanish, our state ignores the cultural, social, and economic reality of its people.

Recognizing Spanish as California’s second official language would:

Bring justice and equality to millions of Spanish-speaking residents who deserve representation in education, business, and government.
Strengthen schools and universities by embracing bilingualism as a standard, giving students a competitive advantage in the global economy.
Support businesses and workers, making communication more effective and inclusive across industries.
Protect access to healthcare and essential services, where language barriers can literally mean life or death.

Governor Gavin Newsom has often spoken about California’s diversity, equity, and inclusion. Now is the moment to turn those words into real action. We call on Governor Newsom and the California State Legislature to officially recognize Spanish as California’s second language.

This is about respect. This is about justice. This is about the future of California.

10 million voices are waiting. Governor Newsom, the time is now.

California is already bilingual — let’s make the law catch up.
