Asian Americans have a long history in California starting from the Gold Rush in the 1800s and made major contribution to the construction of Transcontinental Railroad.

Later generations of Asian Americans worked hard at many different professions, especially science and technology, contributing significantly to the success of America.

However, Asians have historically been subjected to discrimination and mistreatment. Our contributions are often not recognized, even ignored. The recent rise of anti-Asian hate crimes owing to pandemic scapegoating is a painful reminder of the historical racial injustice against Asians. 

Governor Newsom, please recognize the many contributions of Asian community, acknowledge the 15% and growing Asian population in California and appoint an Asian American to fill Senator Feinstein’s seat if it becomes open. There have been black and Hispanic senators in California. It’s time for an Asian senator!
