Give the Pit Bulls More of A Fighting Chance

Give the Pit Bulls More of A Fighting Chance
The Issue
California is overrun with animals. It is overrun with pets that are abandoned, left behind, lost, or not cared for. One pet in particular happens to be the pit bull, which some claim is the most misunderstood dog in the world. Pit bulls are seen everywhere; in homes, on television, in the pound, and in movies. They truly are famous dogs. The breed is known for its strength, quick endurance, stamina, and powerful jaws. The media loves to portray the behavior of the whole breed when there is a fatal incident or an attack caused by a pit bull. Everyone sees pit bulls and gets frightened because of the wrong-doings of some dogs and other humans. They are all viewed in a negative way and it must be stopped because any pit bull lover would say that the Staffordshire terrier and pit bull terrier breeds are two of the most loving and honest companions a person could have. We must change the way pit bulls are viewed and find them great homes instead of killing them off. The most common dog in the animal shelters happens to be the pit bull because they are so easy to obtain, according to the pet finder data used by PawNation organization. There is an abundance of pit bulls and the things people use them for are not always the best due to their history and reasons for what past generations have used and bred them for. “Out of all the shelters across the nation there happens to be 35,000 pit bulls that are up for adoption each day and a rough percentage between 700,000 and a million pit bulls are euthanized every year across America” (Save a life).
Laws must be made. Things must be changed. The way people view and portray pit bulls must change. Pit bulls are great animals and deserve a chance. The ones in shelters must be given a longer time in the shelter for adoption before they are euthanized. California must make a law that says all pit bulls bought through breeders need to be spayed or neutered unless they have proof that they are a responsible breeder. All shelters spay or neuter the animals when they are adopted. Breeders need to charge more or have their puppies spayed or neutered when purchased. A serious pit bull owner would agree to this, or pay a deposit refundable when owners can prove the surgery was done. Then they get the deposit back after showing proof that their pet was sterilized and they must also get their pit bull properly licensed for the area they live in.. “The mission is to rescue but the hope is that one day we won’t have to” (Tia Viallalobos). This breed will one day in the future not have to worry about being killed for its kind and will no longer have to be saved because they will be respected, accepted, and loved by the majority. A breed that is rising up and will continue to rise. As one of America’s first breed of canine the pit bull a man’s best friend.
