Require Nonlead Ammo by 2017

Require Nonlead Ammo by 2017
The Issue
California condors and other wildlife die an excruciating death after ingesting spent lead ammunition in the animals they eat. The Governor of California signed into law AB 711 which requires the Fish and Game Commission to phase-in a lead ammunition ban by July 2019 and encouraged the Commission to do so without unnecessary delay. Despite numerous testimony that an earlier date is feasible and less burdensome to wildlife conservation, the Commission now proposes waiting until the very last day! The ingestion of lead from spent lead ammunition affects 130 species of birds around the world, and is the greatest inhibitor to recovery for the California condor. An earlier implementation of this law is not only necessary for the safety of our wildlife, but fiscally responsible. It costs millions each year to monitor and treat lead poisoned wildlife, only to send them back into the wild to return for yet another costly treatment or worse, death. Manufacturers have successfully enhanced their production to meet the needs of California’s progressive environmental laws in the past, why would bullet makers be any different in the coming years? Please sign this petition by March 25, 2015 and we’ll add your name to our letter urging the Commission to fully implement the new law by 2017!
