Make shortfin corvina an official California gamefish and change size limit to 15."
The Issue
Shortfin corvina have been known to live in San Diego bay by locals for at least 30 years and now mission bay as well as the various lagoons all across the county, yet the department of fish and wildlife ensists that they are not native and did not arrive until 1997. If fish like gulf and broomtail grouper that are also not considered native by CADFW can be protected and are completely off limits, why can't a fish like shortfin corvina that are actually targeted and taken by recreational anglers at least get recognized as a gamefish and be managed somewhat. Similar to the speckled sea trout of the gulf and eastcoast shortfin corvina seem to be tolerable to catch and release fishing as long as anglers take proper measures to ensure the fishes survival. Shortfin corvina reach maturity in about 2 years at around 12-13" with a life span of about 10.5-12 years. Because of this they would likely benefit from a 15" minimum size limit as to allow them to mature and spawn at least once before they are harvested. With shortfin corvina becoming an increasingly popular fishery in San Diego especially among younger anglers, now is no better time to take measures to assure their continued survival as an established fishery in San Diego county.
