Calcutta University's 'UNJUST' Exam Timeline and CMA conflict
The Issue
I am currently a student of the 6th semester under Calcutta University, studying at Serampore College. Like many of my peers, I am deeply concerned about the scheduling of the upcoming 6th semester examinations in June 2026. The Semester V examinations concluded in February 2026, and the Semester VI examinations are being scheduled in June 2026, leaving students with an effective preparation gap of only around three months. This duration is extremely inadequate considering that Semester VI is the final semester of the undergraduate course and carries significant academic importance. Within this limited time, students are expected to attend regular classes, complete the remaining syllabus, prepare project work and practical assignments, revise all subjects thoroughly which itself was unable to do due to West Bengal Legislative Assembly Elections as classes were suspended and many Colleges were occupied for election purpose, and simultaneously prepare for competitive and professional examinations.
Moreover, the academic pressure has increased substantially because students barely received any time to recover from the stress and exhaustion of the Semester V examinations before having to begin preparations for Semester VI. The short interval adversely affects students’ mental well-being, concentration, and overall academic performance. A reasonable preparation gap between two major university examinations is essential to ensure fair academic opportunities and maintain the quality of education and performance expected from students.
Furthermore, this scheduling directly clashes with the CMA Foundation, Intermediate, and Final batch exams, creating a significant dilemma for students.
Calcutta University students, particularly those of us pursuing B.Com, are facing undue stress as we struggle to prepare adequately for both university and professional exams. The CMA examinations are critical for students seeking to advance their careers in accounting and management. These exams are national level, and many students from Calcutta University plan to appear for them. The current scheduling doesn’t allow us to perform to our fullest potential in either examination. For immediate reference, the specific overlapping dates are detailed below: 11th, 13th, 15th, 17th and 18th June - clashes directly with the 4-Year B.Com examinations 12th and 16th June - clashes directly with the 3-Year B.Com examinations.Hence, it's crucial that Calcutta University reconsiders the dates for the 6th semester exams.
We propose the university transition the 6th semester exams to a later date, which would not only solve the clash but also allow students sufficient time for preparation. A postponement would ensure that students can prepare without the anxiety of overlapping schedules, ultimately enabling us to succeed academically and professionally.
We urge the academic authorities of Calcutta University to acknowledge this issue and take prompt action to safeguard the academic future of its students. Please sign this petition to support a change in the exam schedule, helping students achieve their best potential in all arenas of their academic journey.
