FELLOW CAGAYANONS, LET'S OPPOSE THE SALE OF XAVIER UNIVERSITY MAIN CAMPUS TO C.L.I.

FELLOW CAGAYANONS, LET'S OPPOSE THE SALE OF XAVIER UNIVERSITY MAIN CAMPUS TO C.L.I.

The Issue

As you all Cagayanons, young and not so young, are aware, Xavier University was founded in 1933 by Jesuit American Missionaries. That was nearly 87 years ago. So effectively, we have an almost a CENTURY OLD institution which contains most of happiest and fondest memories with friends, classmates, love partners whom we met there.

The now beautiful campus was built largely by the local residents', led by my late father Augusto's charitable help to the financially struggling Jesuits. My dad was, according to Fr. Mariano Varela, S.J., the Jesuits' biggest benefactor, having given them the lands and money to build the initial buildings, money to build the Immaculate Conception Chapel, donated lands and buildings for their X.U.G.S. campus in Macasandig, gave them free vitamins each month, gave them free expensive medicines, paid for their hospital bills at Maria Reyna Hospital, and gave then Archbishop Hayes, S.J., money to rebuild the St. Augustine Cathedral.

The late Fr. Gordon and the late Fr. Masterson were frequently at my dad's Pharmacy, whenever they needed more money. Dad was their go-to person. But when dad got bed-ridden after his stroke, for 11 years, none of these Jesuits showed up to visit him, talk to him for he had no one to talk to, with all of his children either working or studying, hear his Confessions, give him Holy Communion, and administer the Last Rites to him. Except for Fr. Varela who was Immaculate Conception's Chaplain. See, Fr. Mariano Varela, S.J., did his research and found out all of dad's secret donations to the early Jesuits. It's too bad that Fr. Mariano is now comatose at ADMUs pre-departure area bound for Heaven.

The proceeds of the sale will go directly to the Jesuits with no share of the sale going to the heirs of donor families. The land DOES NOT BELONG to the Jesuits for the term of donations were for SCHOOL PURPOSES ONLY, to enable the Jesuits to build a campus that we Cagayanons and the Jesuits can all be proud of.

They say that the sale is intended to decongest the vehicular traffic and parking congestions of the Divisoria area. But the Jesuits can well afford to build a parking building that is several levels basement deep, and several storeys high, and charge for parking as a way of recovering the CAPEX and additional income. So that is a poor alibi.

They say too that the BOT is pressuring them to relocate. Granting that is true, still private properties are protected with ABSOLUTE RIGHTS that government can't just throw away. And building the Main Campus in Manresa is too far a commute for most students.

But the single most important issue here is that the Jesuits have NO RIGHT to sell what does NOT BELONG to them, which is an 87 year old campus full of our memories that we all will cherish in our hearts forever. It seems something that these non-Cagayanons can't comprehend. So let's show them that we are all opposed to the ILLEGAL sale by SIGNING this petition. Together, fellow Cagayanons, wherever you are in the world, we can stop this UNJUST SALE.

Onward Cagayanon Crusaders to AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM. God bless us all.
