Block Release of drone tracking app

Block Release of drone tracking app

The Issue

DJI have produced and are testing a new smartphone app capable of tracking their drones in flight. The data can be received by any smartphone from over a mile away using this app. The data provided includes the direction, speed and altitude of the drone and location of the operator.

This app opens up the possibility for criminals to target lone operators in isolated places for the purpose of stealing valuable equipment from vulnerable people. Airports, police and prisons are already being equipped with the capability to detect and track drones from several miles away and there is absolutely no need for the public or anyone with criminal intent to know the location of a drone or operator. This app must not be released.
