The Issue

Cayenne Wellness Center (CWC) is a vital lifeline for individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease (SCD). For over twenty-five years, CWC has been a beacon of hope, providing indispensable services that address the unique challenges faced by the SCD community. These services include mental health counseling, assistance with locating a medical home, education, and community support—all tailored to enhance the quality of life for those impacted by this serious and often debilitating condition.

Currently, CWC is seeking $15 million in funding from the State of CA over the next three years (2026 - 2029) to not only sustain but also significantly expand its reach and capabilities. This funding is crucial for the expansion of their specialized programs, which have proven transformative for so many lives. At a time when chronic underfunding and a lack of resources threaten to undermine their vital work, this financial support could be the key to a brighter, healthier future for thousands living with SCD.

Sickle cell disease is often overlooked despite being the most common genetic blood disorder, disproportionately affecting African American and Hispanic communities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 100,000 Americans are impacted by SCD, with life expectancy significantly lower compared to the general population. This represents not just a medical issue but also a stark health disparity that urgently needs addressing.  In California, about 7,000-8,000 are living with sickle cell disease.

By signing this petition, you are standing in solidarity with CWC, the families it supports, and the countless individuals whose lives could be transformed by this funding. Your support can help ensure that those suffering from SCD receive the compassionate care and critical resources they so desperately need. Like

/--no cost mental health

/--no cost transportation

/--no cost childcare/respite care

/--rental and/or utilities assistance

/--housing assistance, to name a few.

Together, we can make a difference and help Cayenne Wellness Center continue its essential mission. Let's act now to advocate for those whose voices are too often unheard.

Join us in urging the relevant authorities to approve this funding request. Please lend your voice and support by signing this petition today.  DEADLINE:  MAY 12, 2026.

Thank you.
