C101 and iHeartMedia: Fire Rex Gabriel

The Issue

Instead of helping anyone during the ongoing protests since the murder of George Floyd, on June 4, 2020, Rex Gabriel, the face of C101 Rocks, an iHeartMedia station in Corpus Christi, and host of the Rex in the Morning radio show and podcast, shared an article from Fox News with the headline “NC Motorists who hit protestors blocking roadways will be legally protected under proposed bill” and added “Sweet! Sounds good to me!”

He deleted the post, but not before several people in Corpus Christi had already taken screenshots and voiced their disgust with his glorification of violence against protestors. C101 Rocks responded by deleting the angry comments on Facebook from their listeners that called for Rex Gabriel’s resignation. C101 Rocks and iHeartMedia have not released any statement addressing the post.

Rex Gabriel has been toxic and unashamed of it for a long time. On April 26, 2020, referring to restrictions on the re-opening of Texas businesses, he compared it to intimate partner violence using a disgusting metaphor. He has not deleted those posts on Facebook or Instagram.

C101 Rocks and iHeartRadio posted a statement that they condemn “discrimination, injustice and prejudice of any kind” on #BlackOutTuesday. If they really stand by it, they can start with their own organization and terminate Rex Gabriel.
