Approve Laying Hens in Byram, NJ

Approve Laying Hens in Byram, NJ
The Issue
After 3 years, I received a letter in the mail stating I was violating the ordinance about owning poultry in my town. We have a 6 year old daughter, and each chicken has been named individually by her. My favorite name is Juicy Chicken. My girls lay an egg a day, are quiet, have a well kept coop, are less likely to attract a predator than a pizza box or a toddlers poopy diaper, do not run about the neighborhood (although I have brought MANY dogs back and my daughter was bit by a dog, no one has ever brought me my chickens back), I do not slaughter them, I do not sell eggs, I do not have a rooster and they pose no health risks.
Byram Township is located in Sussex County, NJ and currently has an ordinance stating that residents can own up to 32 laying hens (not roosters) so long as they have 1 acre of property. My proposal was simple, allowing something more proportional. After review, the town council is considering approval of up to five laying hens on any property with the obvious considerations of neighbors (i.e. no bad odor, 20 ft. from bordering properties and chickens are not permitted to run at large). However, some residents are opposed.
Of course, the only people calling in about this issue during the recent town meeting are those that are opposed.
I am looking for those that are not opposed and are willing to sign this petition to help the town council see that there are more people for this, then there are against it.
Common misconceptions about chickens really stem from lack of education, at no fault to the person. I myself, prior to owning chickens, had to educate myself. Here is a very good article to help clarify some common misunderstandings:
The solution is simple. In a time where self sufficiency and supporting local business is essential, I think it is important to allow a few backyard laying hens, respectfully cared for, on a property in Byram, NJ following the suit of many other towns within Sussex County. Thank you for helping us make a change!
