By the people, For the people: Allocating Enhanced Financial Support for Filipino Farmers
The Issue
“Farmers sow the seeds of hope. Individuals must nurture their growth by providing financial assistance, for in their hands lies the abundance of the nation."
Agricultural industry is the backbone of the country's economy, providing food security, employment, and livelihood opportunities for millions of individuals. However, Filipino farmers often endure significant hardships, especially during the surge of the COVID-19 pandemic, due to numerous factors, including unpredictable weather conditions, rising production costs, limited access to credit, and unfair market practices.
With the continuous rise of agrarian threats, students from Grade 12 STEM A of Marcelo H. del Pilar National High School urges the government and other relevant authorities to take the initiative for social change, such as by implementing comprehensive grant programs and subsidies to assist farmers in acquiring modern farming equipment, seeds, fertilizers, and agricultural inputs. Moreover, strengthening extension services to provide farmers with technical assistance, training, and capacity-building programs is necessary to enhance their knowledge and skills in 21st-century farming strategies. Additionally, establishing a credit facility that offers low-interest loans and flexible payment terms creates an opportunity for all farmers, regardless of their location or scale of operation, to access affordable credit and overcome financial problems.
Farmers play a vital role in society as they are responsible for producing the crops, livestock, and other food supplies that feed the entire nation. Without these hard-working people, there would be a significant disruption in the food supply chain, leading to scarcity and hunger. Their absence could also lead to malnutrition, particularly among vulnerable populations, including children, pregnant women, and the elderly.
It is never an easy job being a farmer, having to work all day with their backs arched as they plow through the field. On top of these challenges, they also face financial uncertainties and struggles that can further add to the burdens they carry. Signing this petition is a meaningful way to show your support for the agricultural community. As one of the most difficult professions with low-income rates, listening to and addressing the concerns of our Filipino farmers can help alleviate some of the problems they face, ensuring the accessibility, availability, and stability of foods, which will lead to healthier communities.
Recognizing food security as a fundamental human right, as well as a necessity for human life, is vital for improving the country’s agriculture sector. Collective efforts and collaboration between the administration, international organizations, civil society, and individuals are prerequisites for guaranteeing that everyone has access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food at all times.
