Help push the Burnaby Mountain Gondola initiative!
The Issue
Speaking as students of SFU in Burnaby, BC, the Gondola is long overdue for rapid transportation up and down Burnaby Mountain. Commute times up the mountain are very high with the majority of buses traversing the mountain overcrowded with people. In the winter, buses often have a hard time coming up the mountain, leaving students, faculty, and residents left to walk up the mountain when the bus breaks down. The lines for the buses are long and commuters are often left waiting for three or four buses before they can access the mountain. For a region that sees over 25000 trips up and down the mountain in non-pandemic times, which is expected to grow to around 10000 people over the coming years, it is clear that a form of rapid transit is needed. The Gondola would fulfill those needs with cable cars coming approx. every minute with a 6-minute journey between termini, which would cut down the current 15-20 minute trip commuters face. Furthermore, it is reported that the Gondola would be expected to cut 50,000 hours of bus operation and 1,700 tonnes of gas emissions each year. This is important as it is clear that we as a society need to focus more on the climate as the years progress, especially with everything that has happened with our province over the last 6 months. It is clear we need to move towards cleaner energy solutions to provide not only Burnaby Mountain occupants a better future, but the Metro area and the world as well. Moreover, the 120 million-200 million-dollar Gondola project is projected to help ease the strain on both the bus and Skytrain systems. Although the 120 million dollar contract may seem too expensive and unattractive for many Burnaby residents that don’t take transit to Burnaby mountain regularly, it is projected that 89.3 million dollars will be saved in bus and Skytrain maintenance costs over a 25 year period. Let's unite and petition to build the Gondola!
